Email Marketing

Once upon a time when marketing your business was handled in simple ways that involved regular mail and paper promotions.  Simply being in the yellow pages and sending postcards to your prospects was enough to provide a consistent stream of sales inquires.

Marketing a business today is somewhat different. Rapidly changing advertising techniques open up effective new ways to communicate with your potential customers.  Unfortunately your competitors have access to the the same tools.

Online marketing is a relatively new media, but many old fashioned marketing techniques still apply.  New technologies only alter the way advertising is executed.  The fundamentals still apply. As things have progressed email marketing has become one of the hottest new tools to use.

Based on direct mail marketing campaigns, email marketing is simply the digital version of sending a sales letter.  The primary benefit of email marketing vs direct mail is the significantly lower cost to send.  A direct mail letter must be printed, addressed, put in an envelope and sent.  Minimum cost will be 40 cents per piece.

Compare that to a typical email marketing cost a couple hundred dollars of graphic design and programming (some of which you could probably do yourself) and as low as $5 per thousand emails sent, and you can see why there is so much buzz about email marketing.

Don’t throw out your direct mail experience – the rules still apply

Although email marketing is a highly valuable marketing tool, not everyone is familiar with it, and many companies really do not know understand how to take advantage of this new medium.

Email marketing works best when you use it to educate prospective customers on the value of your products, send special deals and discounts to existing customers, or to entice new customers with special promotions.

Email marketing is a fast and inexpensive way to get in touch with prospects, but don’t abuse it. You still need to act as if you are sending a direct mail campaign – that means tracking phone numbers, salesmanship in writing and good design.

The worst thing you can do is blast out poorly written messages with bad formatting or graphics. You must remember that your email will be arriving next to many other possibly more important emails. Your sales text must be compelling and to the point.

One major benefit to email marketing is that it is generally read instantly and acted on immediately.  It is much simpler for a customer to click on a link and follow it to a store’s website, than for someone to open an envelope, read the contents and then drive to the store or call in.

Email is also read much more quickly than regular mail, which can sit on the shelf for days or weeks at a time before it is even opened.

Naturally, there are also a few disadvantages to email. The very technology email relies on is not imperfect.  There are times that mail servers do not communicate properly, people can change email addresses, and email can be labeled as spam and thus blocked.   These flaws can generally be handled by choosing a reputable email service provider who has the technology and expertise to prevent of these mishaps from occurring.

Use the free trial links above to test out who we believe to be the best email service providers. Most of them will allow you to test send a couple hundred messages for free, so you can see how easy it is to implement an email marketing campaign.
